Chapter 26: Of Two Killings and Two Kings
In this chapter, David leaves with Scylla and considers the crooked man's deal as he finally admits to himself that his mother is dead. He also questions whether the king and the Book of Lost Things will be able to help him. "David hoped that the king wasn't like the Great Oz, all smoke and mirrors and good intentions, but without any real power to back him up" (pg. 260). After some riding, David comes across two armed men dressed in rags. They try to steal Scylla, so David kills them and continues on his way, crying because he is upset about what he has done. The wolves find and eat the dead men and pick up David's scent to follow (they had already been to the village and the enchanted castle). At this point Leroi realizes that the crooked man is protecting David because he wants David to be the new king.
Chapter 27: Of the Castle, and the King's Greeting
In this chapter, David is almost at the castle when he hears wolves howling. The crooked man appears and tells David he will hold off the wolves so David can continue his journey unharmed. He approaches the castle and some soldiers who were awaiting his arrival guide him inside. The captain of the king's guard, Duncan, leads David to the king. The king commends David for his accomplishments and tells David that they will talk more in the morning about why David came. Duncan shows him to a room and David quickly falls asleep. However, he awakes a while later and listens to a conversation between the king and the crooked man. He hears the king ask the crooked man to let him die and the king expresses his regret in regards to the deal he made with the crooked man when he was only a child. David also hears the crooked man say that the Book of Lost Things has no value and the king say that the book is very valuable to him. The two then exit the room and David goes in and opens the Book of Lost Things.
Chapter 28: Of the Book of Lost Things
In this chapter, David discovers that the book merely contains memorabilia from the king's childhood, as well as journal entries. The last few entries describe the boy's hatred for his new sister and that he would do anything to get rid of her. David also discovers that the king is actually Jonathan Tulvey (Rose's great-uncle) when he sees this name written in the front of the book. David quickly leaves the room the same way the crooked man did and finds himself beneath the castle. Here he finds torture weapons and a huge hourglass, as well as the crooked man's room where he finds Jonathan's younger sister, Anna, in a glass jar on a shelf (she is tiny and glows-like a fairy). She tells him that the crooked man ate her heart to stay alive and that her brother comes to visit her and that he is sorry for what he did. She said they also came through the sunken garden and that by saying her name to the crooked man, Jonathan sealed the deal. David takes Anna and starts to run out of the crooked man's lair.
Chapter 29: Of the Crooked Man's Hidden Kingdom and the Treasures That He Kept There
In this chapter, some of the evil things that the crooked man has done are described. We also learn that some things are out of the crook man's control when he brings outsiders into his world. For example, Jonathan's worst fear was the Loups, and he brought them into this world when he came. Unlike Jonathan, David actually overcame his fears that he brought with him (the beast, the huntress, and the woman in the Fortress of Thorns). Time is running out and the crooked man is starting to disintegrate, so he must get David to say Georgie's name before midnight. David reaches his room and places Anna on the balcony so she can see outside again and they can see wolves surrounding the castle trying to find a way to get inside.
Chapter 30: Of the Crooked Man's Act of Betrayal
In this chapter, Anna and David talk about their homes and the unavoidable war between the kingdom and the wolves until Duncan interrupts and takes David to see the king. The crooked man begins to panic as he starts falling apart, so he ventures out to the wolves and leads them into the castle through one of his tunnels. The wolves enter the castle one-by-one and the battle is about to begin.
My Thoughts/Questions:
-important quote about Wizard of Oz-relates to Wicked
-David is getting out of control, killing random strangers
-why does the Crooked Man want David to be the new king? How will David get home? Will he want to go home?
-Jonathon being the king really surprised me
-is everything from the Crooked Man's lair related to a fairy tale?
-I think the Loups will kill the Crooked Man
